Sizism masquerades as a concern for “health.” Puh-leeze. If “health” was really of paramount concern, people who are underweight would be subjected to as much scrutiny and harassment as those who are considered to be “overweight.” Although there are health risks associated with being a certain size, the amount of attention devoted to said health risks is out of proportion compared to other health risks, such as drinking, smoking, driving a car, pollution, environmental racism, insomnia, osteoporosis, et. cetera. There is something to be said for including fresh green things in one’s diet, and getting sweaty occasionally. Nevertheless, the focus on “size” or “weight” obscures the holistic picture of what health, not to mention beauty, are composed of.
